One of the goals of Sophie & Madigan’s Playground is to create free and low cost opportunities for kids and their families to PLAY LEARN and CREATE together in ways that reflect things that Sophie and Madigan would have loved to share with their community. We do this in a lot of ways, with big and small events that are kid and family friendly such as our 5k and fun run, our kids art show, tea party and our full day music and arts festival for kids and by kids , KIDSTOCK. In fact every single fundraiser and event we have held has had the focus of being kid friendly and low cost. This has been great because it allows us to hold events we think benefit the community while allowing us to raise funds. Recently though we’ve refocused our efforts to offer completely free and unique events that meet our goals to help kids and families PLAY LEARN and CREATE and keep the fundraising events to just that fundraising. So we thought we’d share our thoughts on what PLAY LEARN and CREATE mean to us and how we hope to implement those ideas in the years to come.
PLAY ~ Our Play programs are aimed at getting kids and their families out, moving, giggling, and having fun! We want to encourage you to move outside of the daily routine to purposefully interact with each other, to explore, be active, and try new things.
LEARN ~ Our learn programs are aimed at teaching kids and their families new ways of being, doing, and creating. We want to teach the benefits of community service, hold bully education programs, give our community the tools to compassionately work through learning moments, and hold classes that teach new skills.
CREATE ~ Our long term vision for the CREATE programs is that we provide once in a lifetime opportunities to families who are grieving, who are dealing with a medical diagnosis, who have experienced a significant life change, or who know a change is coming.
For now all of these programs are grouped together simply known as our PLAY LEARN CREATE programs and we try to follow the above guideline. This year we have done a decent job of offering one of each of the specific category. This spring we kicked off our first Sophie & Madigan’s Play Trail and we met weekly with our Smiles & Miles group. This fit perfectly into our PLAY category. In November we are starting our SaMP Kids Compassion Club, a service based club focused on teaching kids the importance of community service and how they can make a difference, this fits nicely into our LEARN category. Finally, this past month our Board approved to bring Laurie Berkner Band to play a completely FREE full concert at Childrens National Medical Center this fits our CREATE category.
We would love to hear your feedback on what you think about these programs and suggestions on programs to come.
